DIY Resurrection Eggs for Toddlers and Preschool Kids

Easter is one of my favorite holidays, bringing a joyful celebration of faith to our family every year. Though the holiday itself is filled with joy, the season of Lent reminds us of the suffering of Christ and is difficult to teach to young children. While teaching about Christmas is easy, because babies are fun and easy to celebrate, the Cross and Easter are a bit of a challenge. I created a set of DIY Resurrection Eggs for toddlers and preschoolers and paired them with stories from The Jesus Storybook Bible to help us teach our kids about the real meaning of the holiday. We still celebrate with bunnies and chocolate and cute Easter outfits, but this activity is simple to create and really explains it in a way kids can understand. A few years ago my MOPS group made these Resurrection Eggs and they have been a huge hit with my kids. Our set eventually was destroyed by our toddler tornado, so it was time to make a new one. Inspired by that original set, this time I decided to use stories from the Jesus Storybook Bible to further explain the meaning of each egg. Here’s what you need to assemble your set:

DIY Resurrection Egg Set for Toddlers/Preschoolers

• 6 plastic eggs
• letter stickers spelling EASTER (or a marker)
• heart sticker or cut out
• plastic bandage
• cross sticker or cut out
• rock
• piece of gauze
• half egg carton
• free printable explanation <— Click to download a printable version.

Assemble your eggs with a letter on each one spelling the word EASTER. You can draw the letters on with a marker or use stickers. Fill each egg according to the list below. Tape or glue the printable guide to the top of your egg carton and fill it with your eggs. Invite your kids in to the Easter story. You can go through the whole series at once, do one a day, or briefly explain it over and over. My kids like to do it every day, but we don’t read the full stories each time.

• E – heart sticker or cutout to represent God’s love for everyone
• A – bandage to represent a broken world
• S – cross sticker or cutout to represent Christ’s sacrifice
• T – rock to represent the stone in front of the tomb
• E – piece of gauze to represent the empty grave clothes
• R – empty to represent the empty tomb and risen Lord
