In our quest for a green lifestyle, we’ve tried lots of different things. Some worked for us, some didn’t. We love cloth diapers, but as hard as I tried I just couldn’t get used to a menstrual cup. We switched almost entirely over to reusable microfiber cleaning cloths, but I just can’t make the switch to using cloth baby wipes. Getting started with essential oils has opened up a whole new world of natural solutions for our home, and I know I’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg so far. Today I’m sharing eight super easy and eco-friendly cleaning hacks to help get your bathroom sparkling clean without using harsh chemicals or creating waste. I’m joining my amazing team of Oil Explorers to share our favorite tips for spring cleaning using natural products.

8 Great Natural Bathroom Cleaning Hacks

We use reusable microfiber cloths to clean, as well as vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils. I pay a few cents more for glass vinegar bottles, and then turn them in to spray bottles and storage bottles. *Disclaimer: I’m no expert on cleaning, oils, or really anything, but I am a homemaker and mom trying my best to green our life and home sharing that journey with you. Please use caution and common sense, always keeping essential oils and cleaning products out of reach of kids.

Disinfect & Clean Your Surfaces – I was so tired of cleaning my bathroom with products that made my head hurt and made me feel like I had a contact high. These hacks not only smell great, they are safe.

  • Make a DIY Disinfecting Spray – Add 20 drops of thieves oil (effectively kills 99% of bacteria) to 4 oz of distilled water in a spray bottle. Glass bottles are optimal when using essential oils. To help the oil better disperse in the water, add a teaspoon of salt to the dry bottle, then mix the oil with the salt. Add the water and shake before spraying on just about anything. Thieves is safe to use around kids and can be used to disinfect surfaces and toys.
  • Clean your sink easily by mixing 1/2 cup baking soda with 1/4 cup vinegar and 5-10 drops of lemon or lime essential oil. Pour it in your grimy sink and let it sit for a few minutes. Wipe down the sink and rinse it away.
  • Add a few drops of lemon essential oil to a damp microfiber cloth, and use it to wipe down sinks, counters, and toilets. Be sure to do the toilet last, obviously.

De-Gunk Your Showerhead – Oh man, my shower head was SO nasty. I’m so embarrassed. I I added 3/4 cup white vinegar and 5 drops of Citrus Fresh essential oil to a ziplock bag and secured it over the shower head with a rubber band. I let it sit for about 8 hours, then removed the bag. I wiped it down and all the gunk was GONE. No scrubbing. Amazing.

Make that Toilet Shine – I absolutely hate scrubbing toilets. HATE it. I was so thrilled when I found this nearly scrub free toilet cleaning solution. It is so easy. All you have to do is add combine 1/2 cup baking soda with 1/4 cup vinegar (let your kids watch the reaction – yay science!) and 5-10 drops of tea tree oil. Add it to the toilet and let it work its magic for a few minutes. Give it a swish with your toilet brush and flush all the gunk away.

Freshen the Room – 3 Hacks to Make the Bathroom Smell Amazing

  • Put a few drops of your favorite essential oil on a cotton ball and add it to the bottom of your trash can or diaper pail. We have a constant battle with cloth diaper stink, so this one has been HUGE for us.
  • Make an easy DIY room spray using your a few drops of your favorite essential oil scent (I love Purification and Joy.) mixed with water in a spray bottle. As I mentioned before, be sure to use a glass bottle if you use a citrus oil.
  • For parties or to really take freshness to the next level, bring your oil diffuser to the bathroom and set it to spray every 20 seconds. Every guest will be welcomed by a fresh smelling bathroom, but not overwhelmed with fragrance in a small area.
